Water
The first analysis of Biborteni natural mineral water is performed in 1871. Its subject was the BORHEGYI spring and it was conducted in Budapest by chemist MOLNAR JANOS, a member of the Hungarian Society of Natural Sciences.
In the old days, the internal or external curative usage of mineral waters was made empirically, and knowledge about these treatments was most often transmitted orally, occasionally turning into real legends.
But the development of society
There is no source of information for the exact moment when the exploitation of Biborteni mineral water began. By exploitation we mean the systematic bottling and selling of this product on various market. But Molnar Janos speaks about this mineral water and the fitting out of the spring as early as 1871 in his work
The underground water network gathers rain waters passing through the layers of slate and limestone, this way accumulating many mineral elements.
Carbonated water forms in pools located in underground water-bearing layers of volcanic origin. This structure contains a special type of rocks, called basaltoid andesite, which ensure the permanent enrichment of the water with natural

The first information regarding the existence and usage of mineral waters in the area dates back to the Roman period. Among the objects discovered in the region are Roman clasps and ceramics tubes, which might suggest that mineral water was piped and used for baths in those times. The very name of the place - Villa Byborch - noted down in 1332, shows that the village was a more developed region, almost a small town, perhaps a local spa with carbonated baths.
Several sources of mineral water have been identified in time in the Biborteni area:
1. The BIBORTENI bath is located in the Biborteni exploitation area; the cold pool is fed by two drillings made by the Capeni Mine. The hot bath was operational until 1989 but is now closed down.
2. Birtalan Gyorgy's spring is now a derelict spring with ferruginous water, at the foot of the Tirco hill.
3. The BORHEGYI natural spring is located at the foot of the same hill, close to the Primary School of the village. It is the first natural spring of the Biborteni area which was channelled in a systematic manner, using a project made in Budapest. It was used by local people and by the inhabitants of neighbouring villages. In the 1880s, water from this spring was manually bottled (5000 l/day); it had a total mineralization of 965 mg/l and considerable lithium content.
4. BARROS - this spring is located within the Biborteni 1 Unit ("old unit"). It was named after Baross Gabor, former Hungarian minister of transportation, in acknowledgement of his support for the development of the local infrastructure. These remarks are necessary in order to better understand
references to archive sources, where the name Biborteni points only to the village, while the mineral water from the area is designated with one of the two names mentioned above.
Thus, before the name BIBORTENI became widely-used for the mineral waters coming from the pool with the same name, these waters were referred to by two other names: BORHEGYI, which is Hungarian for "hill of the wine", and BARROS.
